WASHINGTON — Michael Heyman, a key member of the committee that annually reviews approximately 40,000 stamp ideas from the public as part of the Postmaster General’s Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC), is ending his 12-year tenure.

“Michael’s contributions as a Committee member have greatly added value to our stamp program to make it second to none worldwide,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “His leadership as Subject Subcommittee Chair for the past three years has strengthened the stamp program by honoring great Americans and subjects that appealed to our customers.”

Some of the stamps Heyman supported paid homage to American Scientists, Jazz, Jury Duty, Pollinators, Supreme Court Justices and Mark Twain.

In addition to his service on CSAC, Heyman has a long record of public service. Heyman, of Berkeley, CA, became the 10th secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in September 1994. He headed a complex of 16 museums and galleries and the National Zoological Park, as well as scientific and cultural research facilities in 10 states and the Republic of Panama.

Over the years, Heyman has served on and chaired numerous boards and commissions, including almost four years as a member of the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents (1990-1994). He served as a member of the board of trustees of Dartmouth College — his alma mater — from 1982 to 1993, and was chairman of the board from 1991 to 1993. He also has been a member of the board of trustees of the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law since 1977.

Heyman was counselor to Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt as well as deputy assistant secretary for policy at Interior from 1993 to 1994. He served as chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley where he had been a professor of law earlier in his career from 1980 to 1990.

Established in 1957, the CSAC is tasked with reviewing stamp subject proposals received by the Postal Service and is responsible for making recommendations to the Postmaster General. Committee members are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the Postmaster General.
