Points of Light honors UPS for its community engagement and philanthropic efforts for 3rd year

UPS® (NYSE: UPS) today was recognized again as a leader in global volunteerism on the 2016 Civic 50, marking the third year the company has made the list. The Civic 50 initiative by Points of Light, honors the 50 most community-minded companies in the U.S., and helps set a standard for corporate civic engagement, creating a roadmap for companies seeking to improve quality of life in the communities where they do business. Civic 50 winners were announced today at Points of Light’s Conference on Volunteering and Service in Detroit, Michigan.

“As one of the largest, most diverse, and community-focused companies in the world, UPS is committed to leveraging our philanthropy, company assets, and volunteer spirit of our people to help build stronger, safer, more resilient communities around the world,” said Eduardo Martinez, president, The UPS Foundation and chief diversity and inclusion officer at UPS. “Our inclusion on the Civic 50 list for three years is an honor and testament to what UPS values as a company.”

Five UPS philanthropic efforts were recognized on the 2016 Civic 50, including the following:

Veteran hiring and military support: UPS supports policy initiatives and programs that increase veteran hiring and military support. Through the First Lady’s Joining Forces Initiative, UPS has committed to hire 50,000 U.S. veterans and perform more than 50,000 volunteer hours by the end of 2018 to help veterans and Veteran Service Organizations.

The UPS Road Code® program: UPS’s signature road safety program, which promotes safe driving among young and novice drivers to help address the 1.3 million fatalities caused by road hazards each year. In partnership with organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the program utilizes UPS’s own intensive driver training courses and is offered in 43 cities across the U.S., and in Canada, Europe, Asia and Mexico. To date, the UPS Road Code® program has reached nearly 23,000 students in the U.S. and nearly 5,000 international students.

The UPS Humanitarian Relief and Resiliency program, which leverages UPS’s transportation assets, logistics expertise, and philanthropic dollars to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from humanitarian crises. Through this program, UPS and The UPS Foundation have helped respond to some of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, including providing aid for Syrian refugees, providing funding and supplies for the Ebola crisis and speeding critical relief delivery to Nepal following the devastating earthquake there in April 2015, among many other initiatives.

UPS’s Global Forestry Initiative, which has the goal to plant, protect and preserve trees in urban and rural areas and critical forests around the world. UPS employees and The UPS Foundation have planted more than 5 million trees in 46 countries since 2012, and will fund the planting of 15 million trees by the end of 2020.

UPS’s “20 million by 2020” volunteerism goal: UPS has a goal to reach 20 million volunteer hours by the end of 2020. In 2015 alone, UPS employees volunteered for a total of 2.35 million hours. UPS is focused on skills-based volunteering and empowers its employees to leverage their logistics expertise to improve non-profit effectiveness in their communities. A key differentiator is UPS’s Local Grants program, which engages local employees in their communities through three areas: philanthropy, volunteerism and Board service.
