With its new Innovation Campus, DHL Solutions & Innovations has developed a creative space for itself and its strategic partners

Cooperation will encourage development of innovation

Seven companies already signed up

DHL Solutions & Innovations (DSI), the business division established in 2009 by Deutsche Post DHL to develop innovative solutions for DHL, is expanding its site in Troisdorf, near Bonn. With its Innovation Campus, a new-build project located adjacent to the DHL Innovation Center, DSI is promoting the opportunity to engage in research with its external innovation partners and subsidiaries under one roof and to develop a number of further innovative solutions for the future of logistics. The topping out ceremony was held today.DHL is the leading innovator in the logistics industry and became a pioneer for the sector with its Innovation Center. It is now also the first logistics company to build a shared campus to expand and optimize the potential of innovation partnerships. Up to 220 employees can be housed in the two buildings which together form the Innovation Campus. When it comes into operation next spring some 80 employees from DSI and the subsidiary Agheera – DSI’s first spin-out company – will initially begin work there, as well as around 20 partner employees. Partner companies Motorola Solutions, 7id, infoware, Mojix, Zetes and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Fabrikbetrieb und -automatisierung (IFF) have already signed up. As DSI believes the Campus will grow quickly, further sections of the building are planned in a second phase of construction.”The development of innovations requires cooperation, creative ideas and in order to implement these innovations there needs to be an interplay between several partners with diverse expertise,” confirms Steffen Frankenberg, Vice President of DSI. “We are in the enviable position of being able to work with our partners under one roof and this will facilitate and encourage cooperation. The inspirational working environment makes the Innovation Campus a practical think tank for innovative logistics extending far beyond Germany.”Helmut Dockter, State Secretary for the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research, said during the topping out ceremony: “North Rhine-Westphalia is a first class location for specialist research-intensive disciplines and sectors with strong growth potential and logistics without doubt falls into this category. The DHL Innovation Campus is one of a kind within the logistics sector. I am certain that within a very short time important solutions will be developed here to meet the major challenges of our time.”And Ward Vermoere, Global Account Director at Motorola Solutions, was keen to point out the following: “We were inspired by the Innovation Campus concept and wanted to be a part of it straightaway. Over the course of the coming year we hope to attract developers from around the world, for we are convinced that with DSI and other innovative partners we will be able to drive logistic change and develop new practical solutions.”DSI will bring together in the Innovation Campus all 50 employees currently working at either the Post Tower in Bonn or the Innovation Center. DHL subsidiary Agheera will move its 20 employees over from its base in Troisdorf; the potential for this real time shipment tracking specialist company is extremely promising. The company is looking to create a further 15 jobs in 2012 alone. Within the DHL Innovation Initiative, DSI’s strategic partner program, further companies have already registered their interest in moving in.
