Weekly Index, Created with Sports Information Leader STATS, Expands Measurement to Rank Most Efficient Overall Teams in Men’s and Women’s College Basketball

Global logistics leader UPS (NYSE: UPS) and STATS LLC, the world’s leading sports technology, data and content company, today announced new data enhancements to be included in this season’s UPS Team Performance Index (TPI) for men’s and women’s college basketball, including a new data measurement component factoring in the quality of each team’s opponent.

Initially introduced last season, the UPS Team Performance Index for basketball is a data index that comprehensively measures offensive and defensive efficiency for all 345 NCAA Division I men’s and 340 NCAA Division I women’s basketball teams. The Team Performance Index for basketball is a brand extension of the original UPS TPI first launched in August 2012 for NCAA college football.

UPS is the Official Logistics Partner of the NCAA.

The UPS Team Performance Index for college basketball will now include seven key statistical components with a proven correlation to a team’s overall success. These statistical components then are combined in a manner that rewards teams for performing efficiently and effectively in all categories to create the Index, ranking them from highest to lowest.

“It’s no secret that key success indicators on the court – like a strong team structure, smart planning and solid execution – are the same as they are in business logistics,” said Ron Rogowski, UPS vice president, global sponsorship and brand. “UPS is proud of its continued work with STATS on the Team Performance Index, as we’re giving spectators a solid snapshot of the role that logistics plays in determining overall success.”

“The team at STATS is excited to be back with UPS for year two of the Team Performance Index,” said STATS Senior Vice President Greg Kirkorsky. “The new quality of opponent measure has improved the Index’s accuracy, helping us to identify standout teams who truly understand the logistics of success in the same way that UPS does.”

The statistical components of the UPS Team Performance Index for basketball are:

Offensive Measure – Effective Field Goal Percentage

– Effective Field Goal Percentage D efensive Measure – Effective Field Goal Percentage Against

– Effective Field Goal Percentage Against Rebounding – Rebounding percentage amongst all rebounds in a game (if there are 100 rebounds in a game, and your team grabs 60, your rebounding percentage is 60%.)

– Rebounding percentage amongst all rebounds in a game (if there are 100 rebounds in a game, and your team grabs 60, your rebounding percentage is 60%.) Ball Handling – Assists/game, steals/game, opponent assists/game, opponent steals/game

– Assists/game, steals/game, opponent assists/game, opponent steals/game Overall Miscues Measure – “Non-steal” turnovers/game, fouls/game, opponent non-steal turnovers/game, opponent fouls per game

– “Non-steal” turnovers/game, fouls/game, opponent non-steal turnovers/game, opponent fouls per game Success Measure – Winning Percentage

– Winning Percentage NEW – Quality of Opponent – Based on each opponent’s TPI rating

For each of the components, an Index value is created using a proprietary algorithm, with 100 being average. For all categories, anything above 100 is better than average and anything below 100 is below average. The maximum component index is capped at 200 in any category. These components, and the team’s win-loss performance, then are combined to reward a team that excels in all facets of the game.

In 2013, Gonzaga (31-2), which set a school record for wins in a season and also earned its first-ever No. 1 seen in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament last season, topped the final men’s UPS Team Performance Index of the regular season last year with a TPI rating of 130.77. On the women’s side, Baylor (34-2), which advanced to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament last year, led the final regular season Team Performance Index at 139.62, edging out the eventual national champions Connecticut at 138.64.

The UPS Team Performance Index will be updated on an ongoing basis and available at http://hosted.stats.com/cbk/tpi.asp for men’s basketball, and at http://hosted.stats.com/wcbk/tpi.asp for women’s basketball, with the leaders being announced weekly each Monday and continuing through conference tournament play. In creating the UPS Team Performance Index, STATS reviewed 10 years of past men’s and women’s college basketball statistical data, finding a strong correlation to overall performance in all aspects of the game and winning.
